thin brass wire is used to make a strong and flexible underbody frame for my orange dragonfly

0.012 brass wire and two thin strips of orange dyed goose feather

orange goose feathers tyed onto the hook

Wire and hook built up with chenille, as well as three pieces of 10 pound fishing line, secured to each side as well as the top, to provide additional body shaping. Two strips of orange goose feather are tyed onto the wire, one on top and one underneath, and carefully tyed and segmented forwards to hide the thread.

Eyes are glass beads tyed to the hook with a covering of ultra-fine organza.
Wings are hand scribed and colored acetate alternative.

I tried making legs from golden pheasant feathers

creating realistic legs for my orange dragonfly

I will probably finish the fly using legs made of 0.008 brass wire, with a loop of 17/0 thread tied to the tip, which will be cut later to make claws, and the rest of the leg built up and shaped with a couple of strips of orange goose feather.

I will likely apply several coats of custom tinted varnish all over the fly, to protect it from moths and other tiny feather eating bugs, even though it gives the overall fly a more plastic appearance.
